The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories. But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.
I was pretty excited to hop into Allegiant after I had finished Insurgent about a month ago. I still don't know if this is the ending I wished for. I felt like it was perfect to leave it like that, but I also feel this bitter feeling that says, "That shouldn't have happened!"
The first thing I noticed is that the book is now in dual point of views. I feel really weird when an author suddenly changes that during a series. It would be okay if the series was like that right from the start but changing in the middle is a big no-no for me. I moved on reading until I realized that I couldn't tell Tris and Four apart. I thought I'd be reading from Tris's point of view (since I'm so used to it), but then I realize it's Four because he just called Tris. I thought the author could do better than this. Shouldn't a guy narrator and a girl narrator have different voices and different ways of looking at things? But it feels all the same same same.
Other than that, the whole action part was stellar. We're back kicking ass with Tris and now we're introduced to the Bureau. They've now ventured outside Chicago and found that there's a place where there are no factions. The action never really stopped and I really enjoyed that. It was all bam bam bam and never really let you stop and rest. I'm glad about the outcome of things and I felt like it left a bittersweet note for the series.
Unfortunately, the plot / action was the only highlight for me. The romance annoyed me to no end. I loved it in Divergent. I hated it in Insurgent. As for Allegiant, I hated it here too. I feel conflicted about hating them because I think I shouldn't hate them. Yet I find myself utterly annoyed when they fight over the same mistakes they make over and over again. Can't they learn from their lessons? It's about the same pointless things. They always make up so quickly after that as if nothing had happened. Then they'd always doubt the other person or themselves. Were they truly good for each other? I don't know but both Tris and Four seems to think so.
The Divergent series, overall, went downhill from beginning to end. I must say the ending did tie up the book quite nicely. I feel like it's leaving a legacy behind and moving on to greater things. Veronica Roth made a risky decision tying off the series the way she did, but I felt like it couldn't have been more perfect.
