{Review} How to Love - Katie Cotugno

How to Love by Katie Cotugno
Genre: YA Contemporary
Release Date: Oct 1 / 2013
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember: as natural as breathing, as endless as time. But he’s never seemed to notice that Reena even exists…until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears from their humid Florida town without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.
After: Almost three years have passed, and there’s a new love in Reena’s life: her daughter, Hannah. Reena’s gotten used to being without Sawyer, and she’s finally getting the hang of this strange, unexpected life. But just as swiftly and suddenly as he disappeared, Sawyer turns up again. Reena doesn’t want anything to do with him, though she’d be lying if she said Sawyer’s being back wasn’t stirring something in her. After everything that’s happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?
In this breathtaking debut, Katie Cotugno weaves together the story of one couple falling in love—twice.

I thought How to Love would swooning at the story but I'm quite disappointed. This book wasn't at all how I thought it would be.

The story transitions between before and after. That way we get to see the past and what's happening in the present as well. The constantly switching made it harder for me to connect with the story. Just when I felt comfortable, it switches yet again.

I think my main problems were with the characters. I didn't like the main characters at all. I had the biggest problem with Sawyer LeGrande. I got a bad vibe off of him the first time I saw him in the story. I feel like he's a manipulative person and I still don't know whether he loves Reena or not in the end. I think he's a bad influence on Reena and I'm also annoyed at how easily Reena falls head over heels for him. Whatever he says goes. She doesn't even put up much of a fight. Even when Reena saw that Sawyer was a bad person, she still went for him anyways. I don't really get their relationship at all. I actually wished she went with Aaron (other love interest) because I see how he is good for her and the baby.

Basically, the main characters annoyed me to no end. It kept me from enjoying the story and I would always pick out all the dumb things that Reena did with Sawyer. I literally have an annoying voice ranting in my head at very single thing the two did together. Everything was pretty irrational and I don't understand how this relationship would work.

  5. I read the synopsis after reading your review, and it's a big disappointment that this didn't work out- I think it certainly sounds like the promise/offer of or for potential is there, but the characters just sound off, and I think I would be just as disappointed as you, if I read it.
